In dentistry, not every procedure requires illumination or internal cooling. Many doctors are looking for a handpiece that is lightweight, reliable, easy to maintain, and affordable. This is exactly why the MDS ASTRA S 1:1 was created.

The new MDS ASTRA S inherited the ergonomics and mechanical reliability of the ASTRA series, but received the most practical configuration: without internal water supply and without fiber optics. Thanks to this, the design has become even simpler, easier to maintain, and less demanding in terms of operating conditions.

The model is designed to work with electric and pneumatic micromotors with a standard E-Type ISO 3964 connection and provides direct speed transmission with a 1:1 ratio. (MDS)

Why doctors choose 1:1 handpieces

The 1:1 gear ratio means that the handpiece transfers the micromotor speed without increasing or reducing the rotation speed. This allows the doctor to have full control over the instrument and predictable bur performance during operation. (MDS)

In practice, this is especially important during:

• preparation of carious cavities;
• correction of composite restorations;
• finishing of fillings;
• polishing;
• prosthetic procedures;
• work with temporary restorations;
• simple endodontic procedures

What the new ASTRA S design offers

The ASTRA series was created as an alternative to significantly more expensive premium-segment handpieces. The basic ASTRA model has already proven itself thanks to the combination of ergonomics, a durable body, and reliable mechanics. (MDS)

In the ASTRA S version, the focus is on practicality:

• modern ergonomic body;
• standard head for universal application;
• push-button bur chuck;
• compatibility with CA burs Ø2.35 mm;
• radial steel bearings;
• body made of a special alloy with anti-corrosion coating;
• standard E-Type ISO 3964 connection;
• direct drive 1:1;
• no water channel;
• no fiber optics;
• simplified maintenance.

Who the MDS ASTRA S is designed for

  1. For general dentists
    The doctor gets stable speed control during preparation and finishing of restorations. The absence of a water system simplifies maintenance and reduces the risk of internal channel blockage.
  2. For prosthodontists
    Convenient for adjusting temporary restorations, processing acrylics and composites, polishing, and final stages of work.
  3. For pediatric dentists
    The compact head and predictable operation of the handpiece allow comfortable work even in a small operating field.
  4. For clinics with a high patient flow
    Fewer internal components mean easier maintenance, faster preparation for sterilization, and lower service costs.
  5. For training centers and young doctors
    A reliable instrument without overpaying for functions that are not used every day.

What is usually not mentioned in advertising descriptions

Real advantages

  • Simpler construction compared with models with light and water supply.
  • Fewer components that may require repair.
  • Lower ownership cost.
  • Lower weight compared with fiber optic handpieces.
  • Easier cleaning and maintenance.
  • Versatility for most daily procedures.

Real limitations

  • Does not have built-in illumination of the working field.
  • Not intended for procedures where internal water cooling is required.
  • For work under a microscope or in complex clinical cases, illuminated models may be more comfortable.

Why the absence of water can sometimes be an advantage

Many doctors use handpieces without internal cooling for:

• polishing;
• finishing composite restorations;
• adjustment of prosthetic work;
• working with acrylic materials;
• training and demonstration procedures.

In such cases, internal water channels are practically not used but require regular cleaning. This is why some doctors consciously choose models without water.

Answers to the questions most frequently asked by clinics

For which procedures is the MDS ASTRA S suitable?
For therapeutic, prosthetic, and preventive procedures where internal water cooling is not required.

Is the handpiece suitable for polishing?
Yes. Many doctors choose waterless handpieces specifically for polishing and finishing procedures.

Can standard contra-angle burs be used?
Yes. The handpiece is compatible with CA burs with a diameter of 2.35 mm.

Is it compatible with most micromotors?
Yes. It uses the standard E-Type ISO 3964 connection.

Does it require special maintenance?
No. Regular cleaning, sterilization, and lubrication according to the instructions are sufficient.

What is the difference between ASTRA S and ASTRA ML?
ASTRA ML has fiber optics and internal cooling, while ASTRA S is focused on maximum simplicity, reliability, and lower ownership costs.
