Instruments for orthopedic reception. Total
A prosthetic appointment is a well-coordinated process where every detail matters. If a dentist is working with two metal-ceramic units, an experienced specialist can complete the task in about 20 minutes. However, when it comes to full-mouth rehabilitation (total approach), the workflow organization requires a different strategy.
What to Consider During Total Preparation?
- Having a Spare Handpiece
During full-mouth rehabilitation, a dentist preps significantly more teeth than when working with just two units. This leads to increased load on the handpiece. To prevent overheating and wear, it is crucial to have at least two handpieces for rotation. - Alternating Handpieces
The assistant plays a key role in this process. Every 20–30 minutes, the handpiece should be switched:
- One is sent for lubrication,
- The other is immediately handed to the dentist for uninterrupted work.
This approach prevents overheating, extends equipment lifespan, and ensures maximum comfort for both the dentist and the patient.
Conclusion
Efficient organization of a prosthetic appointment is not just about the dentist’s expertise but also about proper equipment management. Having spare handpieces and alternating them correctly eliminates unnecessary pauses and extends the service life of dental instruments.
