A little history of the creation of dental handpieces
The great-grandfather of modern handpieces with a dental instrument fixed inside with a bur for drilling carious cavities is the development of the British doctor George Fellowes Harrington. In 1864, he invented the first automatic bur on springs. A year later, he was offered interchangeable nozzles and the ability to change the angle of the bur. The drilling speed was 100 revolutions per minute, and the charge was enough for 2 minutes of work.
The development of dental burs did not stand still and the next stage was the invention of a foot bur, which was driven by a sewing machine drive. The drilling speed reached 2000 revolutions per minute.
The forerunner of modern burs was the first electric bur, which was invented and patented in 1875 by Dr. Green.
The rotation speed was up to 3000 revolutions per minute, and this record existed until 1914.
Today, the dental handpiece is used in all branches of dentistry and is the main tool, without which it is impossible to carry out treatment and surgical procedures.
